Episode 4
First Examination: Arboreal Chaos
Part Three

     “Where are you?” the white haired woman questions, landing on a branch with her feet and hands. As she looks into a clearing at the center of the forest her every muscle is on the brink of lashing out.

     A second later she drops to the ground, using one arm to swing herself to the surface comprised of roots and stones. Landing in a crouch, she turns her head from side to side, listening intently for any movement in the darkness.

     Suddenly she leaps, flipping forward and drawing a pistol from her bag. As soon as her feet reach the ground she jumps again, causing a shockwave to pulse through the ground, throwing rocks and subterranean roots through the air.

     Whatever she had sensed remains hidden, despite the devastation she had caused.

     Sniffing the air, her eyes lose their fire and she turns towards the trees.

     A vine erupts from the ground, hoisting her into the air by one leg as others fly towards her like spears. In an instant, she points her gun at the wood holding her upside down, an explosion of force rocketing from the chamber and detonating it in a splash of sap. Flipping while she falls, bandaged feet land on a writhing root, her body flying down the lichen-covered mass as she draws a second pistol, firing both in opposite directions to hold new living spears at bay.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
     Shira stands, her cat ears slowly dancing to catch some barely audible sound.
     In an instant she is bounding away, her two companions desperately attempting to catch up.
     An explosion buffets the air, a tree to her right snapping apart like a toothpick before being flung into the sky.
     “Get out of the way!” someone shouts.
     A vine stops in mid-thrust, redirecting itself straight toward her.
     The white haired woman leaps in front of Shira, slamming her fists into the ground and forcing a stone barrier to rise, stopping the maverick plant cold.
     Throwing her fist forward, the woman with wolf ears shatters the rock, sending a spray of mineral darts outwards, piercing the roots and vines before detonating, splattering the ground with remains.
     Pressing a switch on each of her weapons she lets the spent clips fall to the ground, quickly replacing them as she glances nervously from side to side, “keep an eye out…”
     Tremors shift the earth under their feet, a mass of roots bursting through the stone center of the clearing the white-haired woman had made earlier with her shockwave. The vegetation slowly begins to fall away, slamming against the ground and revealing a woman with dirt brown hair and wearing armor made from leaves.
     “A dryad…” Shira says, unable to believe her eyes.
     The creature screams, thorns tearing through her skin and forming into long spikes while the remaining tissue becomes covered in a bark-like substance, every aspect shifting closer to that of a hideously infected being.
     “I don’t think that’s a dryad…” A handgun rises to the female wolf’s eye, taking careful aim.
     Spears of wood strike from underneath without warning, slicing into her arm and tearing the tattered remains of her armor as well as scraping part of her face, causing droplets of blood fall free and splatter against the cold ground. A few runes pull away from around her cheekbones, glittering letters dying in the air to reveal a white crescent scar above her left eyebrow as well as three red triangular scars narrowing from the jaw line on the right side of her head.
     Clawed hands shine in the moonlight, slicing through the wood neatly before she propels herself forward. With every footstep she takes she dodges left and right, narrowly avoiding the tendrils erupting from the ground.
     Metal glints as she puts her two handguns away, reaching towards her back for the small sword strapped there.
     Barbed vines erupt directly in front of her, causing her to abandon her plan and leap backwards before they collapse onto the place she had just been.
     A shout reaches the female wolf’s ears, causing her to glance backwards and catch a brief image of a brown tendril before being crushed into the ground with terrifying force.
     “Shit…” she mutters to herself, rising with the wood for a moment before being pounded into the rock again.
     “Shira!” Mya shouts, appearing from the edge of the forest with Sean.
     The girl with cat ears spins towards them with intent to warn, only able to watch a vine crash into the two, knocking them unconscious on contact, tossing their bodies upwards like rag dolls.
     Flames roar off to one side, the woman with wolf ears slapping her hands together as soon as they are free from the burning mass pinning her down. Punching them into the ground the trees suddenly shift skywards, their limbs catching the slowly falling red-head.
     The boy was less fortunate: the branch intending to save him snaps on contact with his body, causing him to crash through a barrier of leaves before hanging like a piñata from a forked limb by his foot.
     Looking towards the creature covered in bark she dashes forward, using her fingers to create multiple shapes. Air tears around her as multiple balls of flame fly past her head, arcing and covering the ground with a cloud of slowly burning gas.
     The creature emits a horrid scream, diving back underground, but only after a vine lashes out from the roots surrounding her, cutting the female wolf’s left shoulder. Within a second she realizes the other end has wrapped around Shira, who flies past her shouting something incoherent before being drawn into the black hole.
     “Like hell I’m going letting you get away!” she shouts, jumping and performing a headlong dive, the wind howling around her as she desperately outstretches a hand for amethyst hair. A subterranean spear causes her to draw back, her form spinning and flaring left and right in order to avoid the walls and dangerous spikes.
     Suddenly the tunnel ends, causing her to impact with the ground with liquefying force. Somehow her body remains intact, able to stand up and grab the handle of the small blade slung across her back.
     “Now you’ve ticked me off…” she spits in rage, noting Shira bound to the far wall, barely visible in the sparse light flowing from a crystal embedded in the ceiling.
     Green armor blurs as the demon runs forward, slamming her fist into the wolf’s body repeatedly, before slamming it into the red scars on the side of the woman’s face once.
     Both of the women stay there, almost as if held by paralysis.
     The wolf’s jaws, clamped down on the creature’s arm, release, the back of her fist colliding with the mythical creature’s nose, breaking it and throwing her back. White fur explodes along the female's legs, between her ankles and shins, blurring as a series of kicks collide with the dryad’s head, the force pushing it even farther away.
     While swinging the small blade forward the light in the cavern pulses silver.
     In that instant the weapon disappears.
     To Shira’s amazement it had transformed into two swords.
     The woman with wolf ears disappears, immediately reforming behind the demonic figure with the edges of both blades touching, forming a sharp crucifix out to one side.
     “Fire Cross!” She shouts, red lines resembling the shape appearing on the false dryad’s body before a massive howl tears the creature apart, flames biting at the remains. After rotating the two weapons once, she places them back in their sheaths, “Rest in peace.”
     Looking up to Shira, she holds a hand up to her, the fore- and middle-finger outstretched in a V fashion.
     Cat ears press against the woman’s head as the wolf climbs the root system ingrained into the wall, “what are you?”
     “Five years and everyone seems to forget about me,” the figure muses to herself once standing on a group of moss covered vines next to the cat, placing a hand on amethyst hair, “I’m me: Chris. Now sleep.”
     Force bashes the woman’s brain, causing her eyes to close and her body to slip into unconsciousness.
Episode 4
First Examination: Arboreal Chaos
This is the... second write-up of the fight, made it longer and far more frantic, at least in my own mind.
