TERRA NOVA
EPISODE 28
PREDETERMINED

Fang turns his head once the psychic singing stops, watching as the creatures place together the scrap they have collected.
“So what are they doing?” Joseph asks.
“Mobilizing for war.” Laura says matter-of-factly.
One of the purple-armored figures scratches a circle in the dirt around the debris and sets her hands down onto the line. The scrap glows an unbearable white, moving around and placing itself together, so that eventually it is replaced by a sleek hover-tank. One of the figures places a hand on the curved window set into the hull, just below the mini-gun turret, “We are almost ready…”
“If you’re going to fight the entirety of City 13… you’re going to need more than just this tank…” Xorea says.
Laura nods, “Even they know that, that is why they have built many of these.”
“What do they hope to accomplish?” Joseph asks.
“Simple… the humans at the top wish to restore the lost age, the time when they were the most powerful beings on the planet. That age will cause too much pain now, far more than it did then, so we must stop their plans NOW.” It was the first time anybody had heard the N.E.O. raise her voice.
“What happened in the lost age that was so bad?”
“You’ve seen many of the products… and deep down you know what all the others are.”
Joseph nods and, out of the blue, asks, “Ever felt like your life is being written down on paper as it goes along?”
The song begins again…
*******
Blade is caught completely by surprise when the old man slams him with a haymaker, throwing him backwards and down to the ground, “Do you even know how to fight?”
The human stands back up, “Okay… if you want a fight then you’ve got it.” He picks his staff up from where he was hit and holds it out in front of him defensively.
The old man runs forward and takes a few swings, only to have them blocked, then suddenly feigns left, throwing Blade off and leaving him open to a kick to the left side of his head. “You’re pathetic… you can beat my boys but can’t take me…”
“I’m getting ticked off…” Blade leaps forward, swinging the staff like a baseball bat. When it hits the man’s head it emits a hollow crack, “how do you like that…”
Apparently the stick had been stopped by the sheer thickness of the human’s head, “not bad… but I still think you’re a weakling.”
*******
Arc stands up, “So… they finally sent someone…” Two blades erupt from his forearms, curving past his elbows, “Then come at me!”
Kara puts her hand in front of Chris to stop him from attacking, “Why don’t you let me handle this… besides; I need to see how good I’ve gotten at fighting.”
The human rushes forward, trying to catch her unprepared, only to be slammed backwards into the corner of a building by Kara’s fist, “What was that for!?”
“That was for trying to attack me like that!” She shouts as she runs forward, lining up a punch straight for his head.
Arc rolls out of the way of the fist, the impact shattering the stone. He stands up and glares at Kara, “You should have run,” then dashes forward with a slice at the female wolf.
Kara drops to the ground as the bladed arms go over her head, grinning she slams her foot upward straight into Arc’s groin, causing him to double over in pain. “Get up… I know that wasn’t enough to defeat you.”
*******
Joseph looks at Laura, “I guess I’ll fight on your side… I finally feel like somebody is telling me the truth.” He pulls out a lighter, an old memento of his father’s, given to him by the chief of police when his father went MIA. He rotates it a few times between his fingers, “but I’ll need to talk to an old friend of mine… he’ll want to know why war is reaching his streets after all.”
“I will send two of the angels to guard over you.”
Slipping the metal object into his pocket he stands up, “You wouldn’t happen to have any armor that I can wear, would you?” He grins, “I kind of left my equipment back at home.”
“Of course… It is old, but will provide plenty of protection.” Laura says as she begins to walk.
*******
The old man grabs Blade’s staff and gives it a solid jerk, throwing it out to the side. “Let’s see how you do without your bludgeoner.”
Darkkick looks at the two, “Do you guys think we should help him out?”
“Who? Blade? He got himself into this, so he deserves what he gets.” Dixon says with a smirk.
“Thanks a lot for your concern!” Blade says to his compatriots before becoming locked in a grapple with the old man, neither claiming the advantage. “Now you’re REALLY ticking me off…”
*******
Kara leaps over Arc’s charge and draws a pistol that she had taken from Chris. Having the battle keep going was a grievous error, as her enemy grew stronger and stronger with each strike she delivered. “Hold it!”
*******
Blade ducks under the old man’s fist, this time countering with a flurry of blows to his stomach and finishing with a uppercut to knock him backwards. “You’re getting better and better as I fight you… I must be getting REALLY old.”
“Just goes to show that you shouldn’t pick a fight that you can’t win…”
The old man just grins, “I said I was getting old… but don’t count me out,” before putting himself in an attack stance once again.
Didja ever get one of those days that you had a hard time coming up with a title?
